What Electrolytes Actually Do
Electrolytes are minerals that dissolve into charged particles — and charge is the operating system of your body. Sodium and potassium create the electrical gradients that let nerves fire and muscles (including your heart) contract; calcium triggers each contraction and carries its own signals; magnesium regulates hundreds of enzymes and stabilizes nerve excitability; chloride and phosphate handle acid–base balance and fluid distribution. The fluid-regulation link is the one that matters most for hydration: your kidneys decide whether to retain or excrete water largely by sensing sodium concentration, so water without electrolytes is water your body can't hold onto properly.
When You Actually Need Them (and When You Don't)
A regular day needs no supplements: a typical mixed diet delivers 3–4 grams of sodium and 2–3 grams of potassium before you touch a sports drink. The real cases: exercise past 60–90 minutes, where sweat carries away 400–1,100 mg of sodium per liter; heat waves and physical jobs; illness with vomiting or diarrhea (this is what oral rehydration solutions were invented for); and one subtle trap — drinking very large volumes of plain water, which can dilute blood sodium to dangerous levels during ultra-endurance events. Do I need electrolyte drinks every day?
